في هذا الكتاب ترجمة كتاب (الطريق من باريس إلى القدس Intinèraire de Paris à Jérusalem) الذي كتبه فرانسوا رونيه دو شاتوبريان في العام 1811، وهو أول كتاب للرحلات الغربية للعالم الإسلامي، حيث افتتح شاتوبريان الطريق إلبى ما يطلق عليه بالرحلة إلى الشرق Le voyage en Orient.
واعتمد المؤلف في ترجمته هذه على أكثر من خمس طبعات متفرقة ومن فترات متباعدة، ولكن الأكثر إعتماداً هي الطبعة الأخيرة التي تضمنت على سبع مقدمات، وهي طبعة العام 2002 الصادرة عن دار غاليمار.
وقد ابتدأ المؤلف كتابه بالرحلة إلى البلاد الإسلامية أي من الرحلة إلى القسطنطينية، ثم ألحقها برحلته إلى ردوس ثم إلى يافا وإلى بيت لحم وإلى البحر الأحمر ثم إلى القدس وختم رحلته بالذهاب إلى مصر (مدينة الفراعنة).
وقد اجمع رجال الأدب والمختصون من دقة المؤلف واجمعوا في كتاباتهم على إطراء أسلوبه الرصين، وكتبت عنه مجلة لوكورييه دولوروب "Le Courier de l'Europe" في العدد 11 للعام 1811: "إننا لا نجد في هذا المؤلف ذلك التصنع ولا ذلك الترهل ولا تلك الصور الضخمة والخارجة عن الطبيعة التي عبنا على الكاتب إستعمالها في الغالب".
شاتوبريان من أوائل المستشرقين الفرنسيين الذين كتبوا عن الشرق، وهو في كتابه هذا يكتب ما يراه، وما يسمع أو يشعر به بأسلوب تلتقي فيه نكهة الأدب بخطوط الجغرافيا والتاريخ.
