يعتمد هذا الكتاب على يوميات المؤلف الدكتور بطرس غالي الأمين العام السابق للأمم المتحدة، والتي تزيد على ألف صفحة مودعة في مؤسسة هوفر بجامعة ستانفورد؛ حيث يمكن الاطلاع عليها بعد عشر سنوات. وهو أول تقرير مصري كامل عن خبايا وأسرار ما جرى في كامب ديفيد كتبه من قيل عنه إنه، المهندس الأكاديمي، لهذه الإتفاقيات. والكتاب كما يقول الرئيس الأمريكي السابق كارتر "وصف للمؤامرات والمناورات التي جرت وراء الستار"، ويحكى كيف تصدى الوفد المصري، أو "عصابة" وزارة الخارجية كما اطلق عليهم الإسرائيليون، لإحباط مخططات إسرائيل، ويبين الخلافات العنيفة التي ثارت بين أنور السادات ووفده، وكذلك التناقضات بين الوفد الإسرائيلي وصراعاته الداخلية. وكان للمؤلف في ذلك دور حاسم باعتباره وزير دولة للشؤون الخارجية وقائما بأعمال وزير الخارجية (77-1991). والكتاب ملئ بالحكايات والطرائف التي تكشف عن شخصية واسلوب عدد كبير من قادة العالم: تيتو كاسترو وسنغور وعيدى أمين وسياد برى ومنجستو. والدكتور بطرس بطرس غالي لا يكاد يحتاج إلى تعريف فقد نهض في حياته بمسؤوليات وأعباء جسام أكسبته شهرة ومكانة مرموقة سواء في المجال الأكاديمي، أو في العمل السياسي، أو في مصبه كأمين عام للأمم المتحدة (91-1996). وإذا كانت السياسة قد استأثرت بجهد كبير من الدكتور غالي في السنوات العشرين الأخيرة، فقد كان أبرز معالم حياته هو العمل الأكاديمي أستاذا في الجامعات المصرية والأجنبية، ومؤلفا لعدد كبير من الكتب، ومشاركا في مجتمعات ومجامع علمية ودولية، كما أنه رأس تحرير مجلتي "السياسة الدولية" و"الأهرام الاقتصادي" واختير عضوا بالبرلمان المصري.
