إذا كان التعريف يستلزم التصريح بما كان عليه الشاعر إليا أبو ماضي، فإننا لا نغالي إذا قلنا بأن أبا ماضي، كان أميناً على عزة النفس وكرامتها، والأخذ بيد الإنسان إلى شاطئ الأمان، وهو يحرص أشد الحرص، أن لا يبقى ضباباً يتسبب في ضياع، أو سراباً يخدع بوهم، كما تنطلق نداءته في أجواء بني البشر ندية مبهجة، ثم ترتد إلى النفوس المتعطشة إلى طبيعة مؤمنة مفرحة، فتنبت في الهمم الفتية، المبادئ الخلقية، والقيم العلية.
وتستطيع أن تقول، وقد فرغت من قراءة بعض دواوين الشاعر، بأنه حكيم وإنساني من الطراز الأول، وإذا قرأت البعض الآخر تقول بأنه الثائر على التقاليد والأوهام، والممزق لحجب الجهل والضلال، والقائم حرباً على التخاذل والميعان، وإن إكباره وإجلاله لساكن الكوخ الحقير، لا يقل عن إجلاله واحترامه لأمير القصر الكبير.
وإذا انتهيت من قراءة ما نظمته قريحته، تجد الجمال الفني، والفكرة البكر والديباجة المرصعة بروح وطنية تفيض بشاعريته وأريحته وسمو خلقه، الذي من خلاله إدراكنا حقيقة هذا الشاعر المميز عن سائر الشعراء بمعرفة نفسه، ومكانته بين عارفيه وقارئي قصائده، الذي لم يقدم إليهم أبياتاً منظومة، أو كلمات مقفاة، وإنما خلاصة ما يحمله من تجربة شعرية صادرة من صميم قلبه، وثنايا روحه الهائمة بوجدانية الطبيعة، وضمير الوجود الحي.
وقصائد هذا الشاعر الفذ، تتربع خصائص الشعر المتكاملة العناصر ضمن الأدب المعني بالواقعي، المؤهلة لتسنم قلب الصدارة في الشعر المهجري الهادف، والملتزم بنهضة الحداثة الأدبية.
والقارئ إذا يطالع الشعر الذي نضعه بين يديه، فسيجد فيه ما تأنس إليه نفسه، وينجذب إليه فؤاده، ويدخل أعماق حنايا مشاعره، إن بقصصه ذات الاتجاه الواقعي، أو برمزه المعتمد على الأساطير المستمدة من الكتاب المقدس، أو التراث الموشح بومضات شعرية، وتراثية، نازعة إلى التجديد المتوكئ على مناهج القدماء في المبالغة والفخامة، وصيغة تعدد الموضوعات، ولكنه يكون مناهج تستجيب للبيئة المعاصرة الكاشفة عما يعتمل فيها من قيم وأحداث. ومن أجل ذلك جعل شاعرنا لقصائده صناعة فنية محببة في محافظتها على نهج الإقبال على الحياة، والاستمرار في الدعوة إلى المحبة والتفاؤل والإنسانية، بأسلوب مشرقي وبحور مجزوءة، وأنغام متعددة، تجيد استنباط الابتكار، دون العدول عن الروي والعروض الواحد، المجلبب بعاطفة تعيش التجربة، وتصقل العاطفة، لتكون عنصر القصيدة الناهضة بالتطور الإنساني المتكامل المبني والمعنى.
