قد يكون الفن التشكيلي أكثر الفنون فردانية وحميمية، فهو التعبير الأعمق عن شخصية الإنسان ومشاعره وأحاسيسه وأحلامه وكوابيسه، وهو الإنعكاس الأكثر صدقية لعلاقة الفرد مع محيطه وبيئته.
لذلك نلاحظ أن أقدم الفنون هي الرسومات الصخرية التي تركها الإنسان الأول منذ آلاف السنين ناقلاً في معظمها صوراً مدهشة في دقة خطوطها لما كان يحيط به، وما كان يتعامل معه في حيوان ونبات على وجه الخصوص.
في لبنان تحديداً، وفي العالم العربي على وجه العموم، الفن التشكيلي رغم أنه حديث العهد نسبياً، فهو مُتقدم بأشواط بعيدة، لا على بقية الفنون فحسب، ولكن كذلك، وبالأخص، على البُنى الثقافية والإجتماعية القائمة.
فليس هناك لوحة للأقلية وأخرى للأكثرية، وليس هناك لوحة مسيحية وأخرى مسلمة، وليس هناك لوحة سنية وأخرى شيعية، وليس هناك لوحة أرمنية وأخرى عربية، وليس هناك لوحة للرجل وأخرى للمرأة، بل هناك عمل فني يرتقي بالإنسان ومعه، عابر للطوائف والمذاهب والأجناس والأقطار، كلما عكس بيئته، كلما كان عالمياً، وكلما عكس هموم البشر، كلما كان إنسانياً.
وأخيراً، فإن هذا الكتاب هو مسك ختام سباعية "ذاكرة بيروت الثقافية" التي إنطلقت مع إعلان بيروت عاصمة عالمية للكتاب عام 2009، والتي تضمنت ستة عناوين أخرى (مثبتة على الغلاف الأخير)، حاولت الإحاطة بمختلف أوجه النشاط الثقافي اللبناني والعربي الذي حضنته بيروت منذ أواسط القرن العشرين وحتى اليوم في مختلف مجالات الأدب والمسرح والسينما والموسيقى وتيارات الفكر والثقافة، على أمل سد الثغرات وتلافي النواقص في طبعات لاحقة.
