Book Description
يتم التحاق الشاب أوجين إلى خدمة العلم في بلاده (فرنسا) وكلّه أمل أن تنتظره محبوبته (هيلانة) لحين انتهاء خدمته ليؤسسا حياةً مشتركة معاً. ولكن الرياح لا تجري بما لا تشتهي السفن، فما أن فرغت الفتاة من وداع خطيبها حتى وجدت أبيها ميتاً في الدار تاركاً لها ثلاثة أطفال عليها أن تعيلهم.
كان الأب يعمل عاملاً في مصنع السيد موريل صاحب مصنع اللعب، فلم تجد الفتاة بداً من اللجوء إليه لتعمل بدلاً عن أبيها في المصنع، ولأنها كانت فتاة جميلة وفي ريعان الشباب، وكان السيد موريل محروم الأولاد من زوجته، حدثته نفسه بأن يتزوجها، فعرض عليها الزواج، وهو يعرف أنها ستوافق تحت ضغط الحاجة. قاومت الفتاة في البداية، وحاول خطيبها ثنيها عن قرارها، ولكنها انصاعت لأوامره. في هذه الأثناء يصل أوجين هارباً من خدمة العلم ويطلب مقابلة السيد موريل، والذي سوف يحضر له تهمة السرقة ما أن يدخل مكتبه، فيدخل أوجين السجين مظلوماً، ولكنه يستطيع الهرب وتأسيس حياة ثانية، يعود بعدها إلى هيلانة بعد سلسلة مغامرات يعيشها في بلاد مختلفة، ولكنه لم يستسلم، فالحب أقوى دافع كان بالنسبة إليه، وخاصة أنه كانت بانتظاره مفاجأة "أعترف أني لم أكن زوج هيلانة إلا إسماً، وإن ولدها مارسل الحاضر هنا الآن، هو إبن أوجين ديمون" ، أما موريل فاختفت آثاره من حياة "أوجين ديمون وهيلانة" ذلك أنه تلقى جزاءه العادل على ما كان يفعله بعماله وخيانته لبلاده.
