يعد هذا الكتاب كتاباً مختصراً في الفقه على مذهب الإمام الشافعي, وهو في غاية الاختصار ونهاية الإيجاز, ليقرب على المتعلم درسه, ويسهل على المبتدي حفظه, وكان من أهم المواضيع التي تناولها ما يلي: الطهارة, الصلاة, الزكاة, الصيام, الحج, البيوع وغيرها من المعاملات, الفرائض والوصايا, النكاح, الجنايات, الحدود, الجهاد, الصيد والذبائح, السبق والرمي, الأيمان والنذور, الأقضية والشهادات, العتق.
هو القاضي أبو شجاع شهاب الملة والدين أحمد بن الحسين بن أحمد الأصفهاني, نسبة الى أصفهان. إمام ناسك وعابد صالح, اشتهر في الآفاق بالعلم والديانة. وولي القضاء ثم الوزارة, وكان لا يخرج من بيته حتى يصلي ويقرأ القرآن ما أمكنه, وقد ذكر أنه عاش مائة وستين سنة, ولم يختل له عضو من الأعضاء, توفي سنة 488هجرية ودفن بالمسجد الذي بناه.
