يعدّ كتاب مختصر أبي شجاع المسمى "متن الغاية والتقريب" من أجمع وأبدع وأخصرِ ما صُنف في فقه الإمام الشافعي، وهذا ما دفع العلماء إلى الاهتمام به وشرح متنه وتحقيق نصوصه. وليسهل درسه على المبتدئين وحفظه عني بجمع هذا المتن ضمن هذا الكتيب المخصص للجيب وذلك لتسهيل حمله والاضطلاع عليه من وقت لآخر، أما مصنف هذا المتن فهو الإمام الفقيه العلامة شهاب الدين أحمد بن الحسين بن أحمد، أو شجاع. وهو من العلماء الأعلام الذين ذاع صيتهم في البصرة، فكان مثالاً للقضاة العادلين وهذا ما أهّله ولاية القضاء سنة (447هـ).
