الفكر الحر هو ظاهرة ذاتية وأصيلة في الحضارة العربية الإسلامية، وإن يكن انحصر في قلة من المفكرين النقديين ممن طالت يد القمع كتاباتهم، وحتى حياتهم، وألصقت بهم تهم الزندقة والخروج على الصراط المستقيم.
رواد الفكر الحر هؤلاء يتصدر صفوفهم مشاهير من أمثال ابن المقفع والرازي والمعري، ولكن كذلك مغمورين أو مهمشون من أمثال ابن الريوندي والوراق، أو أخيراً مليون ينتمون إلى الحضارة نفسها وإن كانوا ليسوا من الديانة نفسها من أمثال حنين بن اسحق وحيويه البلخي وابن كمونة.
يؤكد هذا الكتاب البعد الانفتاحي، وحتى النقدي، للحضارة العربية الإسلامية في المجال الديني قبل أن تنغلق على نفسها مع سيطرة الفكر الفقهي والأصولي الذي قادها إلة ليل "الإنحطاط" الطويل.
