ولد سولِر في لايورتوغِسا، براكروث، المكسيك 1963، تلك المزرعة التي أسّسها أبوه مع أولئك الجمهوريين القطلانيين في منفاهم هناك على إثر خسارتهم للحرب الأهلية، ذلك الصراع الدامي، الذي ما تزال جراحه مفتوحة حتى اليوم، والذي كما ترى في هذه الرواية التي بين أيدينا يؤثّر على الجيل الثاني بل وربّما على الجيل الثالث منهم تماماً كما حدث مع الروائي المكسيكي الأسباني جوردي سولّر.
إن الذين يُغادرون بلادهم هرباً من عدوٍّ داخلي ربح الحرب، تبقى حياتهم معلّقة بالبلد الأم الذي خسروا فيه الحرب، وإن سنحت لهم الفرصة، كما يحدث في هذه الرواية واستطاعوا أن يعودوا، يكتشفون أنّ كلّ شيء قد تغّير، فلا المكان عاد مكانهم ولا الناس بل ولا حتى اللغة التي تكلموا بها وحرصوا عليها في منفاهم في اللغة التي يسمعونها في بلدهم الأصلي بعد عودتهم، وهكذا يكونون قد خسروا عمرهم في إنتظار شيء يتلهفون إليه، يعتقدون أنّه موجود، لكنّه في الحقيقة لا وجود له إلاّ في رؤوسهم وبذلك تحدث الخيبة الكبرى وتنكسر الروح بإنكسار الحلم الموهوم.
يحتلّ جوردي سولِر مكانة متميّزة في عالم الأدب ليس في أمريكا اللاتينية فحسب بل وفي العالم، فقد ترجمت أعماله إلى عدد من اللغات، صدر له حتى الآن كتابان شعريان وعشر روايات، منها ثلاثية الحرب الخاسرة، التي تُقدّم اليوم الجزء الثالث والأخير "حفلة الدب".
