بالرغم من أن مالطا لا تصنف عادة بين الأقطار العربية فإن لغة أهلها "لهجة عربية"، ذلك أن معظم مفرداتها عربية بالإضافة إلى أن نظاميها الصرفي والنحوي لا يزالان عربيين.
و"معجم المفردات العربية في اللغة المالطية" أول محاولة من نوعها في هذا الباب، ذلك أن المعجم يمتاز بما يلي: إيراد الكلمات العربية مع مقابلاتها المالطية، إثبات الشروح المحيطة بالموضوع، بيان التغيرات الصوتية التي طرأت على الكلمة، كالإمالة والنبر، بيان التحولات الصرفية كالعدول عن بعض الصيغ والأوزان إلى أخرى، التعليق على التحولات الدلالية للأصل العربي وربطها بالمؤثرات الاجتماعية والتاريخية السائدة، مقارنة اللفظة المالطية بمقابلاتها في اللهجات العربية الأخرى، إيراد الألفاظ بصورتها بدون العودة إلى الجذور، لغة فصيحة قريبة المتناول مضبوطة ومشكلة.
