لقد أتى الزركشي في هذا الشرح على مختصر الخرقي في الفقه على مذهب الإمام ابن حنبل، والذي وقع في مجلدات سبع، بما لم يأت به أكثر شراح هذا الكتاب أو كلهم حيث أنه اطلع على المغني وعلى أغلب الشروح التي سبقه أهلها، وعلى غيرها من المؤلفات الفقهية في المذهب وأتى بزبدتها، وزاد عليها من كتب الحديث والآثار والأدب واللغة الشيء الكثير. وقد اقتصر في هذا الشرح على مذهب ابن حنبل، وطريقته أنه يبدأ بإيراد المتن مصدراً بلفظة "قال" يعني الخرقي، صاحب المؤلف الأساسي ثم يرمز لبدء الشرح بحرف "ش" فيشرح المتن ويوضحه ويعضده بما اطلع عليه من الأقوال والنقول، ويستوفي ذكر الروايات الأخرى عن أحمد في المسائل، أو الوجوه التي استنبطها أصحابه، ويرجع منها ما ترجع عنده بما يسرده من الأدلة والتعليلات، ويحقق المسألة في الغالب تحقيقاً كافياً، ثم يذكر كلام الخرقي وما يشير إليه وما يدخل تحته، فيشرح ذلك كغيره، ثم ينبه على بعض الأقوال التي نقلت، وفيها خطأ، أو لم يعرف المراد بها، ثم يشرح غالباً المفردات اللغوية التي تر في الأحاديث أو في بعض النقول. ومما تميز به، اعتناؤه بإيراد الأحاديث النبوية، والآثار السلبية، واستقصائها غالباً، حيث يكون لها صلة بالمسألة، مع ذكر مصادرها، وعزوها إلى مخرجيها، وقد يتكلم أحياناً على ما يصلح منها للاستدلال وما لا يصح، كما تميز بالنقل أحياناً عن شبح الإسلام ابن تيمية، حيث يورد من أقواله، التي اطلع عليها، ما يرجح به بعض ما يختاره أو يحكي مذهبه كقول من الأقوال التي يوردها في المسألة. وقد أتى ذلك كل بأسلوب في غاية القوة والفصاحة والبيان.
