مصنف هذا الكتاب هو شرف الدين: موسى بن أحمد بن سالم أبو النجا الحجاوي المقدسي ثم الصالحي، أحد أركان المذهب الحنبلي، مرسي قواعده ومشيد بنيانه والمدافع عنه، والمحتج له في القرن العاشر، شيخ المتأخرين من علمائه، وأستاذ المتقدمين من رافعي لوائه، في الديار النجدية، ولد بقرية حجة، في سنة 895هـ، فنشأ في حجة، وقرأ القرآن ودرس أوائل الفنون والعلوم، وأقبل على الفقه إقبالاً كبيراً. ثم ارتحل إلى دمشق، فسكن في مدرسة شيخ الإسلام أبي عمر، وقرأ على مشايخ عصره ممن يشار إليهم بالبنان، ولازم منهم العلامة الشويكي في الفقه إلى أن تمكن منه تمكناً تاماً. برع ونافح ودافع عن مذهب الإمام التقي أحمد بن حنبل رضي الله عنه وتصدى لمسائله، وكشف النقاب عنها وجلاها.
وكتابه الذي بين يدينا لخير دليل على تصدي الإمام الحجاوي للدفاع عن هذا المذهب وإتقانه لمسائله إتقاناً تاماً، وبالعودة لمتن كتابه هذا نجده كتاب بديع في بابه، مفيد لطلابه، تلقاه العلماء بالشرح والحواشي والتعليقات نظراً لأهميته في المذهب. وأهم ما يميز هذا الكتاب القيم هو تحرير المسائل، وتنقيتها مع تجريدها وتجليتها.
