خلال التاريخ كانت هناك تقارير عن حوادث غريبة تقع خارج نطاق الأسباب الطبيعية: هي المعجزات، وبعض الإدعاءات كانت غريبة لدرجة أنه لا يمكن تصديقها، ولكن بعضها الآخر شوهد ولا يمكن رفضه بسهولة، وبالتأكيد إن الدلائل تستحق اعتبار جدي.
إن النظرة العلمية تجعل من الصعب التصديق بالحوادث الخارقة والمعجزات بأكثر من أنها تسمية خاطئة لحوادث غريبة وغير مفسرة ولكنها طبيعية، وهكذا نبدأ مع التحدي الأساسي فيما إذا كان أي دليل للمعجزات يمكنه أن يكون مقنعاً ودافعاً للفكرة بأن القوانين الطبيعية يمكن أحياناً أن يتم تجاوزها من قبل قوى ما وراء الطبيعة.
إن ما نعنيه هنا بكلمة معجزة هي حادثة خارقة للطبيعة ولا يمكن تفسيرها وتقع خارج مجال الأسباب الطبيعية وتعزى لقوى ما وراء الطبيعة، إن الأحداث المسجلة والمؤهلة على أنها معجزات يصل عددها للآلاف، ولكن يمكن إهمال الكثير منها لسبب أو آخر.
في هذا الكتاب وهو الأول من نوعه تسجيل لبعض الحوادث الغامضة والمثيرة التي حيرت العلماء، وحتى الآن لا يوجد لها أي تفسير علمي، وكل ما يجري هو أن العلماء يتابعون هذه الحوادث بذهول.
وفيما يلي تبيان للحوادث التي يعالجها هذا الكتاب، والتي تعد من أهم الحوادث الغامضة والمثيرة التي حيرت العلماء: (الدوائر والأحجار الواقفة الغامضة، النيران القديمة الغامضة، السموات الغامضة، عمالقة في الأرض، وحش بحيرة نيس الغامض، التحليق رقم -19-الغامض، رجل الثلج الغامض، انفجار سيبيريا الكبير، الأشكال الغامضة المرسومة على سطح الأرض.
