ما من مسؤول أو متتبع للشؤون السياسية إلا وتردد على مسمعه إسم "هنري كيسنجر"، الذي عاش الدبلوماسية الأمريكية ردحاً من الزمن، وعلى الأخص بين عامي 1968 - 1977، وهي فترة كانت مسرحاً ساخناً للأحداث السياسية على الصعيد الدولي كادت في حرب تشرين التحريرية عام 1973 أن تصل إلى مواجهة شاملة بين القوى العظمى. هذا الرجل الذي شغل منصبي مستشار رئيس الجمهورية الأمريكية لشؤون الأمن القومي، ووزير خارجية للولايات المتحدة، أظهر وبإجماع الكل، مهارةً في فن الدبلوماسية، وما رحلاته في أوروبا وآسيا إلا خير شاهد عليها.
وتسجيلاً لمنجزاته، دوّن كيسنجر مذكراته في جزءين وضعا أولاً بالإنجليزية، ثم ترجما إلى الفرنسية، وعنا ترجم الأستاذ خليل فريجات هذه الصفحات إلى العربية في أربعة أجزاء.
يقول المؤلف: كتابي هذا عرض للسياسة الخارجية طوال الولاية الأولى الرئاسية لريشارد نكسون، أي منذ استدعائي لوظيفة مستشار في قضايا الأمن القومي بُعيد انتخابات عام 1968 حتى نهاية مباحثات فيتنام، التي تصادف تولية نكسون الثانية كانون الثاني من عام 1973 ...".
وعليه يصدح هذا الكتاب سرداً كاملاً لتاريخ عايشه واحد من ألمع نجوم الدبلوماسية على مستوى العالم، ووصف لما شاهد، وفكر به، يقدمه مستنداً كاملاً بالمعنى التاريخي الحقيقي الذي يمثل تلك الحقبة التي يغطيها هذا المؤلف كانت مسرحاً لتنازع داخلي واضطراب دولي دخلت فيها الولايات المتحدة أجواء عالم كان نفوذها فيه كبيراً غير أنها لم تكن أقوى من غيرها برأي كيسنجر، فكانت مرحلة مؤلمة "جرت فيها مساهمة أمريكية مثمرة لمستقبل العالم الحر".
يحتوي الكتاب على مذكرات وبراهين مكتوبة ووثائق تعود إلى الصحيفة التي كان يديرها صاحب المذكرات، بالإضافة إلى تقارير ومستندات محفوظة ذات أهمية بالغة المشتغلين في البحث العلمي والشأن السياسي.
