إن كل مشكلة عامة في الفلسفة كانت تقوم حول تصور أساسي يرتبط بهذه المشكلة ويكون هو محورها ومحركها، وهكذا كان التصور الأساسي بالنسبة للمنطق مثلاً هو ثنائية المادة - الصورة، في حين كان التصور الأساسي لمشكلة الوجود هو ثنائية الجوهر - العرض، في حين أن التصور الأساسي للإشكالية العامة لنظرية المعرفة هو ثنائية الذات - الموضوع، وبمصطلحنا الذي اخترناه عنواناً لهذا الكتاب هو ثنائية الأنا - العالم.
إن كل نظرية من نظريات المعرفة الحديثة تحديداً، حاولت أن تحل هذه الإشكالية من خلال تحديد طبيعة العلاقة بهذه الثنائية، أولاً وتفسير نوع العلاقة التي يمكن أن تنشأ بينهم إن وجدت، ثانياً متسائلة عن إمكانية إدراك الأنا لهذا العالم؟ وحين تثبت هذه الإمكانية تتجه إلى الوسائل التي تحققها، ثم إلى حدودها، أنها تبحث كما يعرف كل مبتدئ في الفلسفة في طبيعة المعرفة ووسيلتها ثم في قيمتها.
وكما هو معروف فقد شغلت هذه المشكلة مكانة متميزة في تاريخ الفلسفة عموماً، والفلسفة الحديثة على وجه الخصوص، وقد وصفت يحق بأنها مشكلة الفلسفة الأساسية، لأن حل جميع المسائل الفلسفية يتوقف في نهاية المطاف على حل هذه المسألة.
وكانت الإجابة المقدمة عن هذه المشكلة هي التي تحدد إنتماء الفيلسوف إلى هذا التيار الفلسفي أو ذاك، أي أنها تصبح معياراً تصنيفياً ناجحاً في الفلسفة، ولو تتبعنا تاريخ هذه المشكلة وحضورها في الفلسفة لنرى كيف نشأت، ثم كيف نمت وتطورت وتعددت فيها الآراء وتشعبت لوجدنا أنفسنا نكتب تاريخ الفلسفة كله، وبالأخص في العصر الحديث.
لأن الفلسفة الحديثة وضعت السؤال المعرفي وضعاً محدداً وواضحاً وبلورته بوصفه سؤالاً حاسماً في الفلسفة تتوقف الإجابة عليه الإجابة على بقية الأسئلة الفلسفية.
