خواطر باسكال التي جاء بها للدفاع عن الدين عبارة عن نفثات علوية خطّها لنفسه ليجعل منها نواة لأضخـم مصنف من نوعه كان بالإمكان أن يكون، فأدركه مطفئ الآمال ومحطّم المطامح، وإذ بتلك الفِكَر العجيبة نثار من الأوراق المبعثرة هنا وهناك، يتعهدها القوم جمعاً وتبويباً وتنسيقاً، ثم يتمثلونها بالطبع، فيقفون حيارى أمام غوامضها، مذهولين أمام روائعها، لا يجرؤون على تبديلٍ وتحوير، مخافة أن يسيؤوا إلى تلك العبقرية المخيفة التي انبثقت منها تلك الالتماعات السماوية الخواطف، وما كانت إلاّ معالم خيرة تشرف على عوالم لا نهائية من الفكر المنطلق في رحائب المعرفة، حتى الحدود التي رسمها الخالق عز وجل للعقل. ودعا الإنسان إلى الإيمان به سبحانه، فلا يحاول أن يجاوز ماوسع له من المدارك والأفهام.
