يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يبعث الحياة في موضوع قديم، ولست بحاجة، فيما أرى، إلى وصف الوضع الحالي للبلاغة، فهي اليوم أكثر القفار إيحاشاً، وأقلها فائدة عند المبتدئ في اللغة الإنجليزية.
فقد انحطت حتى صرنا نفضّل أن نطوّح بها إلى الجحيم، عن أن نكلّف أنفسنا عناءها، ما لم نجد سبباً يُسعفنا على الإعتقاد بأنها يمكن أن تكون دراسةً تستجيب للحاجات الضرورية بنجاح.
وليس هناك مجال للشك في هذه الحاجات، فالبلاغة، كما سأبيّن، يجب أن تكون دراسة لحالات سوء الفهم وطرق معالجتها.
ونحن في عراك مع سوء الفهم طوال حياتنا، ولسنا ندافع عن أية دراسة تصده عنا أو تزيله، بالطبع نحن لا نملك في الوقت الحاضر وسيلة نقيس بها حجم خسائرنا ومقدارها في التوصيل كلَّ حين.
وسيكون هدفاً من أهداف هذه المحاضرات، أن تفكّر في بعض هذه الإجراءات التي لا بدّ منها في محاولة تقدير الخسائر، ما مقدار إختلاف التوصيل الجيد عن التوصيل الرديء، وبكم طريقة يختلفان؟...
إن هذا السؤال كبير ومعقّد تصعب الإجابة عنه كما هو؛ لكن في مستطاعنا في الأقل أن نحاول عن بعض جوانبه، وستكون إجابتنا وتوضيحاتنا هي موضوع "البلاغة" التي ننوي إحياءه.
