يُعدّ الصدر الأعظم إبراهيم باشا من الشخصيات المهمة التي ظهرت في التاريخ العثماني، وكان ظهوره متزامناً مع تولّي السلطان سليمان القانوني للحكم، والذي يُعدّ عهده قمة ما وصلت إليه الدولة العثمانية. دخل إبراهيم باشا إلى الدولة العثمانية مع الغلمان العبيد الذين جيء بهم من أوروبا الشرقية، وفي عهد السلطان سليم الأول(1512-1520م) عيّن ابنه سليمان حاكماً على تلك المدينة، وهناك التقى إبراهيم، وقرّبه إليه حتّى جمعتهما علاقة صداقة قوية، وبدأ إبراهيم العمل في خدمة سيده، وصار المسؤول عن طيور صيده، فكان ذلك أول منصب يتولاه، وبعد أن صار سليمان سلطاناً للدولة العثمانية، عيّن صديقه إبراهيم مسؤولاً عن الجناح الخاص به، ثمّ مسؤولاً عن جواري القصر. ازدادت العلاقة بين السلطان سليمان القانوني وإبراهيم باشا قوة، ولاسيما بعد أن أخذ السلطان يستشيره في كثير من الأمور التي تخص الدولة، وأخذ يغدق عليه بالمناصب حتّى منحه منصب الصدارة العظمى، فصار وزيره الأول، فزوّجه من أخته، وبذلك حصل إبراهيم باشا على ما كان لا يحلم به، فتحولت حياته من عبد من عبيد الدولة العثمانية إلى الرجل الثاني بعد السلطان.
