هذا الكتاب مجموع قصائد شعرية كتبها الدكتور عفيف نايف حاطوم" في الشعر العربي الموزون أو ما يسمى شعر التفعيلة.
يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة للدكتور حاطوم يشرح فيها أسلوبه الشعري ويرد فيها على النقاد يقول فيها: (... هذا النوع من الألم الممزوج بالفرح الأبدي الوهمي هو وحده الذي يوحي للشاعر المطبوع بالموضوعات الإنسانية والإجتماعية المشحونة بالمعاني والصور الشعرية الجيدة المبتكرة الخالدة المسبوكة في قوالب من الألفاظ السهلة الموحية المعبرة أوضح تعبير عن المعنى المقصود المراد؛ والمتسمة بسمة الجرس الموسيقي العذب الرنان المشنف للآذان والمطرب للقلوب...".
يلي ذلك عرض لديوان الشاعر والذي جاء بعنوان "ديوان القلب الخفاق" ويضم (139) قصيدة في الشعر العربي الموزون الذي قال فيه شاعرنا "أتمنى أن أجد لكلماتي هذه الموزونة بالأوزان الموسيقية الشعرية الصدى المطرب المفيد في نفوس النقاد والقراء...
ومن رياحين هذه الشعرية الرائعة قصيدة بعنوان [وردة حبَي]: "وردتي وردة جميلة، أيَ كفَ لا مستها، أندى من كفَ حبيبي/ أي روح عانقتها، أسمى من روح طبيبي/ لونها يفرح قلبي، من شذاها بت أحيا (...)".
