بين يومي الاثنين 14 آذار/مارس، والأحد 3 نيسان/ابريل من سنة 1932، عقد في القاهرة، مؤتمر الموسيقى العربية الأول، وقد حضرته نخبة مختارة من علماء الموسيقى المصريين والعرب والأجانب، وشكلت فيه اللجان. وهذا الكتاب يروي بالصور والوثائق حوادث هذا المؤتمر حيث يعرض لأهم المسائل التي نوقشت فيه ومنها: هل يعدّل السلم الموسيقي العربي، وهل تدخل آلات الموسيقى الغربية في أداء الموسيقى العربية، وهل يعتمد البيانو الشرقي المعدل الذي ابتكره وديع صبره. وقد ضم هذا الكتاب أكثر من 75 صورة لأهم المشاركين في المؤتمر إلى جانب ثلاث وثلاثين ترجمة لسيرة أهم العلماء والموسيقيين العرب والأجانب الذين اشتركوا في المؤتمر. وقد نشر الكتاب لأول مرة نصوصاً من صحافة القاهرة سنة 1932 لم تنشر من قبل، عن الخلافات التي نشبت في المؤتمر وخارجه، قبل وبعده إلى غيرها من الأمور التي مثلت بكليتها تغطية كاملة لهذا المؤتمر الموسيقي الهام، لما علم عنه الناس وشاهدوه ولما دار وراء الكواليس ولم يعلموا عنه ولم يشاهدوه.
كتاب يتضمن جزؤه الأول رواية لما حدث في المؤتمر الشهير، وأهم ما ظهر فيه من خلاف، في شأن السلم المعدل، وإدراج الآلات الغربية في الموسيقي العربية، وآراء محمد عبد الوهّاب وغيره في هذا الشأن. أما الجزء الثاني، ففيه نصوص كاملة غير معدلة من مجلة "الصباح" القاهرية التي واكبت الحدث ستة أشهر، بالصورة والتحقيق والمقالات والمقابلات. إنه مصدر أول عن المؤتمر.
