"دعوني أعترف بأن الوطن قد خذلني بينما لم تخذلني الحبيبات" بهذه العبارات التي ضمنها مقدمة ديوانه يعبر جمال بخيت بمرارة عن معاناة عاشها، وحياة أمضاها راكضاً وراء وطن أراد له أن يسمو وأن يرتقي لتسعد به أجيال تأتي بعد الشاعر "لكنه كغيره من عشاق الأوطان أحرقتهم نار الحب، وسلط عليهم داء القمر والغربة. إن وطنه هو وطن الفقراء والبسطاء الباحثين عن لقمة العيش الباحثين عن الكرامة والعزة، لا وطن الساسة المنافقين والتجار والأدعياء.
وقصائد الديوان جاءت باللغة العامية المصرية لتكشف الصلة المتينة بين الشاعر وبين أبناء البلد الطيبين الذين يتوجه إليهم الشاعر، ولا غرابة إن رأيناه في القاهرة 80 يقول: "القاهرة 80، حب وأمل وأنيني، أناهية.. هية أنا شيلي الحجاب يا سنين، قلبي ميدان إسفلت، كفي حواري وطين"، فهو ينتمي إلى تلك الحواري وإلى تلك الأزقة التي انطوت على عذابات المصريين ومعاناتهم.
ولا ينسى الشاعر وهو في غمرة الألم أن يؤكد هويته فيقول: "اسمي: بشر، عمري: ألوف، والإنسانية: مهنتي، عنواني: دنيا من الحروف، وجميع ما أملك: كلمتي"، وهنا تعبير عما يكتنزه المصري من تاريخ وحضارة ضاربة في القدم يحملها المصري معه أينما ارتحل في هذا العالم الكبير.
