في مطلع عام 1761م انطلقت البعثة العلمية الدينماركية من كوبنهاغن، قاصدة اليمن عبر تركيا فمصر فميناء جدة، وكان مقرراً لها أن تمكث في اليمن عامين إلى ثلاثة، لم تمكث منها غير سبعة أشهر، غادرت بعدها ميناء المخا بعد أن فقدت اثنين من أعضائها بسبب الملاريا، ثم مات الباقون تباعاً بعد مغادرتهم اليمن متأثرين بالمرض نفسه، لم يبق حياً منهم سوى نيبور، الذي عاد إلى الدينمارك واستطاع وحده بجده ودأبه أن يحقق جزءاً كبيراً من مهام البعثة، فسجل جوانب كثيرة من الحياة اليمنية، ضمنها يومياته التي تم نشرها في ثلاثة مجلدات، وكتابه (وصف بلاد العرب).
وقد استهدف المؤلف في هذا الكتاب التقاط المادة التاريخية من كتابات نيبور عن اليمن، التي تسلط الضوء على فترة من تاريخ اليمن الحديث، ثم عمد إلى تجميع المواد المتناثرة وتنسيقها وترتيبها ضمن سياق واحد وفق منهج واضح يؤدي إلى رسم صورة للحياة اليمنية في القرن الثامن عشر وييسر دراسة وفهم تلك الفترة من تاريخ اليمن الحديث.
