يعد الأدب الأكدي بفرعيه (البابلي والأشوري) من أغنى الآداب القديمة من حيث غزارة النصوص وتنوع الموضوعات (الأساطير، الملاحم، السير الذاتية، رثاء المدن، المناظرات، أدب الحكمة ...).
والملحمة التاريخية (موضوع البحث) جنس مستقل من أجناس الأدب الأكدي، وهي نص أدبي يستقي مادته الرئيسة من حوادث تاريخية حدثت في فترات متباينة، ومناطق مختلفة من أرض الرافدين جنوباً وشمالاً. ونستطيع أن نعرّفها بقولنا: "وثيقة تاريخية مغلّفة بدثار أدبي بارع، هدفها الرئيس تخليد مآثر الملوك الحربية والإشادة بانتصاراتهم".
جعلت الكتاب في مدخل وبابين أساسيين. تحدثت في المدخل عن بلاد الرافدين ملخصاً تاريخها السياسي منذ الألف الثالث ق.م. عصر السلالات السومرية الباكرة، وحتى سقوط بابل على يد الفرس عام 539 ق.م. ثم انتقلت للحديث عن الأدب الرافدي عامة، ووقفت عند أهم الأعمال الأدبية الأكدية، وختمت المدخل بالحديث عن الملاحم التاريخية الأكدية وتمييزها عن الملاحم الأدبية الأخرى.
