إن إعداد مؤلفات الشيخ محمد بن علي حرز الدين وما احتوته من معلومات مهمة وكيفية الحصول على تلك المعلومات والعوامل والظروف التي ساعدت على تدوينها والدوافع الكامنة وراء كل ذلك تسوغ لنا تساؤلات تبقى معلقة ما لم يسلط الضوء على شخصية الشيخ محمد حرز الدين وسيرته العلمية والثقافية ومنهجه في التدوين التاريخي الذي يعد خصباً بالدراسة الوافية العلمية الدقيقة.
لقد توزعت مادة هذه الرسالة على مقدمة وأربعة فصول وملحق وخاتمة، وقد تناول الباحث في الفصل الأول الذي يحمل عنوان حياة الشيخ محمد بن علي حرز الدين، أما الفصل الثاني فتناول الباحث فيه نتاج الشيخ محمد حرز الدين الفكري والعلمي والثقافي من خلال كتبه معارف الرجال.
أما الفصل الثالث الذي يحمل عنوان موارد كتاب مراقد المعارف فقد خصص لموارد كتاب مراقد المعارف، أما الفصل الرابع الذي يحمل عنوان أبرز مواقف الشيخ محمد بن علوي حرز الدين من الأحداث السياسية والإجتماعية فقد تناول فيه الباحث آراء المؤرخين والعلماء في الشيخ حرز الدين وكذلك بيّن رأيه في نقد الكتاب وبالأخص كتابه معارف الرجال.
وتطرق هذا الفصل أيضاً إلى أبرز مواقف الشيخ محمد بن علي حرز الدين من بعض الأحداث السياسية للإحتلال العثماني والبريطاني للعراق ومن حكومة الملك فيصل وحكومة ياسين الهاشمي والأحداث الإجتماعية في النجف من أحداث الشمرت والزكرت.
