يتناول هذا الكتاب بالبحث والتحليل الأمراض العصبية وأعراضها التي تصيب بشكل خاص الأطفال والأحداث، وهذا البحث لا يتعرض للعلوم الأخرى التي لها علاقة بموضوعنا هذا لأن ذلك مجاله أوسع بكثير من أن نتطرق له في هذا الكتاب.
وقد عمد أن تكون بؤرة الإهتمام حول التشخيص والعلاج النفسي لهذه الأمراض، ولفهم القواعد والنظريات في التشخيص والعلاج النفسي لا بد من مدخل بسيط في علم النفس التطوري بالإضافة إلى محاولة عرض الإطار العام للأمراض العصابية والذهانية، حتى يسهل التنظيم والتمييز والدقة، وتقسيم الأمراض إلى عصابية وذهانية والحديث عن التشوش أو الإضطراب في الإدراك أو التفكير أو السلوك ليس ألا من قبيل الترتيب والتنظيم الشكلي دون أن يغير من جوهر المواضيع المذكورة.
العلاج النفسي في الوقت الحاضر تختلف حوله الآراء، ومن حسن الحظ أن وجهات النظر والأساليب العلاجية في العلاج النفسي للأطفال والأحداث متفق عليها إلى حد مرضي، ولكن لا بد من الأخذ بعين الإعتبار المدارس العلاجية النفسية المختلفة التي لتعدها ولإختلافها في المفاهيم ظهرت بينها فروق كبيرة سلبية التأثير.
لهذا روعى في هذا الكتاب تجنب المصطلحات والمفاهيم المحتوية على أكثر من معنى مع محاولة تفسير المصطلح المستعمل مباشرة حتى يأتي بالغرض المراد منه.
