المكان: فرنسا، الزمان: أوائل الحرب العالمية الثانية بعد الهزيمة النكراء التي منيت بها فرنسا وأثناء دخول القوات الألمانية إلى مدن فرنسا ومنها المدينة التي تدور فيها أحداث هذه الرواية. والشخصية الرئيسية في هذه الرواية جندي يحمل صندوقاً شبيهاً بصندوق أحذية، ويبحث عن شخص لا يعرفهن ولا يعرف في أي شارع أو بيت يقيم.
يدور الجندي في متاهة شوارع المدينة بحثاً عن هذت الشخص المطلوب فهل يجده؟ نراه يمر على حانة، فنرى من خلال عينيه التجمعات البشرية عناك والنادلة تخدمهم، وأكثر زبائنها جنود. فتوصف لنا الحانة وصفاً دقيقاً كما توصف صورة فوتوغرافية على رف مدفأة تصور حانة أخرى، وتوصف الشوارع والثلج يسقط، وىثار الأقدام على الثلج الناصع البياض، ثم الولد الذي يكون دليلاً للجندي، وطفل آخر، ما الفرق بينهما؟ ثم بيت جندي غائب وزوجته، وأخيراً الثكنة/المستشفى الذي يعالج فيها/ فيه أشخاص كثيرون، ثم دخول القوات الألمانية للبلدة. فهل نراهم وهم يدخلون؟ وما هو رد فعل الجندي على هذا؟ وما هو مصيره؟
هل قصد الكاتب تصوير الحرب وشرورها؟ أم قصد تصوير مصير الإنسان أثناء الحرب العالمية الثانية؟ على القارئ أن يعيش الأحداث والواقع في هذه الرواية حتى يحكم عليها. ولكل قارئ الحق في خلق رد فعله بعد قراءتها؟ فالكاتب يقدم للقارئ عالماً،وعلى كل قارئ أن يخلق عالمه الخاص من خلال عالم الكاتب هذا.
