عرف الإنسان الرواية منذ زمن طويل، ولقد كانت الرواية فى نظر الكثيرين مجموعة من الأحداث تدور بواسطة عدة أشخاص فى تسلسل زمنى معين. وبمعنى آخر كان الزمن هو البطل الحقيقى فى الرواية منذ نشأتها حتى الآن: فمن "أميرة كليف" لمدام دى لافاييت حتى "البحث عن الزمن الضائع" لمارسيل بروست و"أوليس" لجيمس جويس. كان "الزمن" يحتفظ بمكانة مرموقة فى الرواية. وإذا كان "الزمن" قالباً تصب فيه الأحداث فى الرواية "البلزاكية" والرواية "الفلوبيرية"، فإنه نسبى فى الرواية الحديثة، عند حويس وكافكا وفوكلر وغيرهم. أما فى الرواية الجديدة فالأمر يختلف تماماً. ويحاول الآن -روب- جرييه فى هذا الكتاب أن يشرح هذه النظرية الجديدة فى الرواية. إنه يقول إن لكل إنسان زمنه الخاص... وإنه لم يعد هناك وجود لتلك العلاقة الكاذبة بيننا وبين العالم (علاقة الإمتلاك والسيطرة فى القرن التاسع عشر، وعلاقة العبث فى القرن العشرين...) وإن البطل الحقيقى فى الرواية الجديدة هو "المكان". وتلك هى الثورة التى أتى بها -روب-جرييه.
