لا أعلمُ لغةً خُدمتْ كما العربية، ولا أعلمُ علماً من علومِها خُدمَ كما النحْو، إذ به تقويمُ اللسان، وعليه عمادُ الإعرابِ الذي هو ركنُ معرفةِ المعاني، وهو الركنُ الركينُ في معرفةِ التفسيرِ والحديثِ الشريف، حتى قالَ العلماءُ: تعلّمُه على طالبِ التفسيرِ والحديثِ فرضُ عينٍ.
وقد صُنّفت فيه مصنفاتٌ مُطوّلاتٌ ومُختصرات، متونٌ وشروح، ومن أشهرِ متونِه في العصورِ المتأخرةِ متنُ ابنِ آجرّوم، فقد انتشرَ في الآفاقِ، وصارَ أولَ ما يَقرأ الصبيان، بعدَ تعلّمِهم القُرآنَ الكريم، إلا أنه مُختصرٌ لم يُحطْ بكلِّ أبوابِ النحو.
حتى جاء الحطابُ الرعينيّ فضمَّ إليه ما فاتَه من أبوابِ، وسمّي بــ متممة الأجرّومية.
شُرحت هذه المتممةُ بشروحٍ عدّةٍ، من أشهرِها وأجلّها شرحُ الفاكهاني.
