يدرس علم استعمال اللغة أو التداولية اللغة في حيز الإستعمال متجاوزا حدود الوضع الأصلي وإن كان يبني عليه، وذلك لأن مقاصد المتخاطبين لا يمثلها الوضع اللغوي المجرد فقط، ولا يمكن الوصول إليها إلا من خلال فهم اللغة في سياق الإستعمال المتجدد بتجدد مقاصد المتكلمين، يستند فيه المتخاطبون إلى الوضع اللغوي، ويتجاوزونه تلبية لمقاصدهم وأغراضهم الدلالية.
يدرس هذا الكتاب الإشكالات التي وقع فيها مصطلح التداولية في سياق استعماله لدى عدد من اللغويين. حيث اعتبر مؤلف الكتاب "بلانشيه" أن مصطلح التداولية بات على درجة من الغموض. إذ يقترن به في اللغة الفرنسية المعنيان التاليان: "محسوس" و "ملائم للحقيقة" أما في الإنكليزية فإن كلمة Pragmatic تدل في معظم الأحيان على "ما له علاقة بالأعمال والوقائع الحقيقية". وهكذا يبدو لأول وهلة أن الحقل الذي فتحه هذا الإختصاص العلمي المسمى تداولية. واسع. توضع فيه الأعمال الهامشية التي لا تنتمي إلى الإختصاصات المؤسسية. وهي اللسانيات وعلم الإجتماع والأنثروبولوجيا وعلم النفس الإجتماعي والدلالية ... الخ نحو المشاكل التي أثارتها هذه الإختصاصات ولم تتوصل إلى معالجتها بشكل مرض. ومن بين المنظرين الأعلام الممثلين للتداولية المذكورين هنا. نجد فيلسوفين وهما "أوستين" و "سورل" وعالم إجتماع هو "غوفمان" وغيرهم من علماء شكلوا محور للدراسة في هذا العمل ...
