وبعد نصف ساعة نامت مرةً أخرى، لكن يدي التي راحت تجوس متسائلة، منقبة، فوق ردفيها، باءت بالفشل، ولم تفلح في العثور على شيء: بديهي أنها لا ترغب اليوم في إعطاء جواب، دخنتُ سيجارتين حتى أفاقت، هممتُ ثلاث مرات بإيقاظها، لكنني لم أبادر، مرة واحدة، بحركة أو بصوت موقظ.
كانت النافذة مفتوحة، وكان ضجيج الشارع أشبه تماماً بيوم أمس، وأول أمس، بل منذ سنة خلت في مثل هذا الوقت.
كان الهواء مشوباً بالهباب والرائحة الكريهة، وله ذات الرطوبة العالية تماماً كيوم أمس، وأول أمس، حتى الأضواء هي هي كما ألِفتُها تماماً.
وكذلك الغرفة، والمحيط، والسيجارة، والسرير، فقط مؤخرة ماريا أشارت إلى تقلّبٍ ما، لم أستطع أن أفكّ لغزه.
