تعد الصورة الشعرية مجالاً واسعاً للدراسة النقدية على صعيد واسع النطاق، وقد لاقت دراسة الصورة الاهتمام الكبير عند دارسي الشعر العربي، و يعود الاهتمام بدراستها إلى كونها أداة الشاعر التي تحكم شخصيته الفنية في الأداء التعبيري من جهة ومن جهة أخرى لأن الصورة تعد مقياساً فنياً وشخصياً للمبدع الذي أنتجها.
وقد تبلورت الصورة الشعرية في أذهان الدارسين على أنها أساس المركزية والمحورية في التعامل النقدي للشاعر، وكانت هذه الخصوصية التي تميزت بها الصورة الشعرية سبباً في انتخاب موضوع البحث، فضلاً عن أن شخصية الشاعر "خليل حاوي" لا تقل أهمية عن الصورة الشعرية ذاتها؛ فهما ثنائية يكمل بعضها البعض.
وقد تطرق البحث إلى تعريف الصورة الشعرية، وبيان مفهومها في النقد العربي الحديث، والمدارس النقدية التي عالجت الصورة الشعرية.
وقد كانت لحياة "خليل حاوي" والطبيعة المحيطة به الأثر الكبير في تكوينه النفسي والثقافي، والذي ظهر جلياً في مفهوم الصورة الشعرية عنده وأنواعها ومصادرها المختلفة.
