يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن سلسلة مقالات نشرها الخوري الأسقفي القس "جرجس منسى" في مجلة "الآثار" الصادرة في زحلة - لبنان لصاحبها عيسى اسكندر المعلوف، وفيها يقف المؤلف على أطلال حلب فيصفها منذ فجر التاريخ وإلى اليوم "دالت عليها الدول، من دولة التمدين، إلى دولة الملك، إلى دولة العلم، واحتلفت فيها المواكب والمجالي على اختلاف الأزمان، فتبوأوا أمراء الحثيين عظماء أمجاداً، وداسها هولاكو وتيمورلنك بحوافر خيلهما، وما جلوا عنها إلا خراباً يباباً ...". ثم ينتقل من آثار حلب القديمة، ليحيي آثار زحلة الحديثة "وأثني أطيب ثناء على منمقها الفاضل، بما يزري بالوشي ويخجل الطراز، سائلاً له مزيد التوفيق إلى إحياء موات الأدب، ولآثاره ما هي أهله من الإقبال والزواج". ويستمر في الوصف عابراً البحار والوديان ليقف عند سواحل (أرواد) وحلبون (حلب) وغيرها، عندما فتحها "تحوتمس" ودك حصونها، "فأسرع ملوك الروتان السفلى (ما بين النهرين) ، فأدوه الطاعة والخضوع" ويستفاد من هذا الكلام ما يشير إليه المؤلف أن قاعدة دولة الروتانو كانت مدينة (قدس) أو (قادش) ، وأن هؤلاء الروتان أو الروتانو كانوا ينقسمون إلى روتان المغرب وروتان المشرق. بعد ذلك ينتقل من الكلام في آثار الروتانيين إلى الحيثيين واليونان والرومان والعرب مفرداً لكل منها مساحة في الوصف مدعماً كتابته بشهادة مؤرخو الآثار.
