إن دراسة حياة العالم الخاصة هي دراسة حقيقية للبشرية كلها ، قال أفلاطون (إن الأشجار والحقول لا تعلمني شيئاً والرجال هم المعلمون الحقيقيون) ومن هؤلاء المعلمين الكبار البيروني الذي قال عنه كلود كاهن (وضع موسوعة فلكية رائعة في مدينة غزنه ، قال فيها بإمكان دوران الأرض حول الشمس امكاناً منطقياً لأنه يساعد على عليل بعض الحركات الظاهرة للكواكب). كان القرن الرابع الهجري الذي عاش فيه البيروني عصر سلام ، حيث ظهرت فيه مراكز تجارية وثقافية كبيرة أثرت في تكوينه العلمي مثل (خوارزم والري وبخارى وجرجان وغزنه) . وصار بعضنا يصدر العبيد والبخور والأحجار الكريمة على حساب جماهير الهندوس البائسة. وصف العالم الألماني ادوارسخاو أبا الريحان البيروني (بأنه أعظم عقلية عرفها العالم) . وللتدليل على صواب هذا لاحكم لابد من دراسة حياته من خلال نقطتين هامتين ، هما ، شخصية العالم العلمية ، والوسط الثقايف الذي عاش فيه. ويرى فيه المؤرخ جورج سارطون صورة البطل المجاهد الدائم في سبيل الحقيقة وكان حسن تصرفه قد جنبه المخاطر ، وكتب عنه أيضاً (الرحالة والفيلسوف والرياضي والفلكي والجغرافي والموسوعي ، إنه أحد عظماء الإسلام ، بل إنه الأعظم فيهم في كل الأزمان ، إن فكره الناقد والشمولي ، جعله محباً للحقيقة ، وألهمه همة وشجاعة لا نظير لهما في كل العصور. وفي هذا الكتاب ستة فصول: الأول يعرض فيه حياة البيروني وأهم أحداث عصره ، أما الفصل الثاني يتحدث عن البيروني كعالم رياضي وفلكي عظيم وفي الفصل الثالث يتحدث عن البيروني المنجم ، والفصل الرابع فهو البيروني المؤرخ الثقة ، أما الخامس فهو البيروني العالم الجغرافي والفصل السادس هو البيروني الفيلسوف.
