لا يمكن أن تتكشّف الحياة، من حيث معناها الحقيقي والنهائي، إلا من خلال فعل التفكير الحرّ الأصيل القائم، على التوجّه الشجاع نحو الموجودات، من أجل اكتناهها بما يساهم في تبيان عللها وغاياتها والأصول التي تصدر عنها؛ لكن تفكيراً مثل هذا قد لا تكون له أية جدوى، في عالمنا العربي، الذي تسوده ثقافة الأتباع.
نعم، إن البحث في قضايا فلسفية شائكة ضمن سياق الثقافة العربية, يعدّ أمراً غير مقبول؛ بل غير موجود أصلاً. وعلى أي حال، فإن المهمة الأساسية للفيلسوف هي مواجهة الخطر والمكوث فيه والإمتزاج معه.
ولا يوجد موضوع فلسفي يدل على خطورة التفكير عند الفلاسفة مثل العدم. فالعدم هو الدافع للتفلسف والعلّة الأساسية في توجيه وعي الإنسان نحو اللاموجود الذي ينطوي من حيث معناه على كل أشكال البقاء المتساوق مع الفناء. والفناء الذي لا يمكن للبقاء أن يكون له أي معنى بمعزل عنه.
إن البحث في العدم هو مخاطرة هائلة تهدف الى تحديد مصير الوجود المطلق انطلاقاً من فكرة "اللاشيء" هذه الفكرة الغامضة ذات الدلالات الدينية والمعرفية التي لا تنتهي.
وأخيراً، إن التفكير حول العدم أمر نادر في الثقافة العربية، لذلك هذا الكتاب هو مجرد بداية، تهدف الى تأصيل العدم، في الوعي العربي بوصفه منبثقاً فريداً للتفلسف.
