إن كتاب "الأعلام" للعلامة المؤرخ الشاعر الأديب الأستاذ خير الدين الزركلي كتاب فرض نفسه في المكتبة أياً كان تخصص صاحبها، لما حوى من التراجم الكثيرة على اختلاف طبقات المترجمين ومذاهبهم وبلدانهم وعصورهم، مع التحقيق والاتقان والعزو الكثير لمصدر الترجمة.
وقد وفق محمد بن عبد الله الرشيد لمطالعة هذا الكتاب والإفادة منه، حيث إنه موسوعة في بابه، ولكنه في أثناء مطالعته له وقف على أوهام وأخطاء ندت عن قلم مؤلف هذه المعلمة، فكان يجمعها ويقيدها حتى تحصل منها هذا الكتاب، فصحح ما استطاع من التراجم ونبه على الأوهام الواقعة فيه.
ولم يستدرك عليه في الغالب إلا ما كان في صلب الترجمة، لأن المؤلف له منهج خاص لا يعرفه إلا من عايش كتابه "الأعلام" وسبره، فهو يختصر الترجمة غالباً، فتراه لا يذكر للمترجم كل مؤلفاته، بل قد يختصر في أسمائها أحياناً، وقصده من ذلك الإيجاز والاختصار، كما أنه لا يذكر كل وظائف المترجم ورحلاته.
فالترجمة التي يأتي بها هي مفتاح الباحث، نعم قد يسهب أحياناً في ترجمة شخص ما وذلك لمدرة الترجمة أو قلة مصادرها، أو أهمية المترجم عنده. هذا وقد كان استدراكي عليه في النقاط التالية: 1-تحديد سنة مولده أو وفاته أو الخلاف فيهما، أو إثبات ما أإفله منهما أو مكان المولد أو الوفاة . 2-تصحيح اسمه أو اسم أبيه أو نسبه أو بلده. 3-نسبة كتاب للمترجم ليس له، أو رمز إليه بحرف (خ) أو (ط) ويكون العكس هو الصحيح، وأما المؤلفات التي لم يشر إليها برمز فلم ينبه عليها. 4-ادخاله لشخصين في ترجمة واحدة. 5-ترجمته لشخص واحد أكثر من مرة. 6-ترتيب التراجم فيما يخالف منهجه وإضافة مصادر لترجمة ليس لها مصادر عنده. 7-سقوط بعض التراجم من الطبعة الرابعة أو سقوط مصادر ترجمته. 8-التنبيه على تراجم أدخلت بعد وفاة المؤلف.
وجعل بين يدي الكتاب مبحثين: الأول: حول طبعات الكتاب. والثاني: عن الكتب المتعلقة به. ورتب هذه الملحوظات حسب ترتيب الكتاب، حتة يعود إلى ما أشكل عليه من ذلك بأقرب وقت.
