اختصت اللغة العربية دون سائر اللغات بفصاحة اللسان وبإبداع البيان، فترى اللسان بها يحوك الوشي من حلل الكلام، ويصوغ من خلالها العبارات الموجزات المعجزات البيان وقد صنف المؤلف كتابه هذا في علم البيان الذي هو من أهم العلوم الأدبية وذلك ليوضح معاقد هذا العلم ومناظمه، وللتنبيه على مقاصده وتراجمه. معنوناً الكتاب بـ"كتاب الطراز المتضمن لأسرار البلاغة، وعلوم حقائق الإعجاز" وذلك ليكون اسمه موافقاً لمسمّاه ولفظه مطابقاً لمعناه. وجعله مرتباً على فنون ثلاثة. الفن الأول منها يذكر فيه المقدمات السابقة في تفسير علم البيان، ويشير في هذه المقدمات إلى بيان ماهيته، وموضوعه ومنزلته من العلوم الأدبية، والطريق إلى الوصول إليه وبيان ثمرته وما يتعلق بذلك، من بيان ماهيّة البلاغة والفصاحة والتفرقة بينهما، مشيراً إلى معاني الحقيقة والمجاز وبيان أقسامهما إلى غير ذلك مما يكون تمهيداً وقاعدة لما يريده من المقاصد. الفن الثاني منها يذكر فيه ما يتعلق بالمباحث المتعلقة بالمعاني وعلومها. مردفاً بالمباحث المتعلقة بعلوم البيان وأقسامها، شارحاً فيه ما يتعلق به من المباحث بعلم البديع ذاكراً خصائصه وأقسامه وأحكامه اللائقة. الفن الثالث يذكر فيه ما كان جارياً مجرى التتمة والتكملة لهذه العلوم الثلاثة، ذاكراً فيه فصاحة القرآن العظيم وأنه قد وصل الغاية التي لا غاية فوقها وأن شيئاً من الكلام وإن عظم دخوله في البلاغة والفصاحة، فإنه لا يدانيه ولا يماثله، مبيناً كونه معجزاً للخلق لا يأتي أحد تمثله ذاكراً وجه إعجازه، وأقاويل العلماء في ذلك، مظهراً الوجه المختار فيه، إلى غير ذلك من الفوائد الغزيرة، والنكت الغزيرة، التي يلحقها المصنف على جهة الردف والتكملة ما سبقها من المقاصد.
