يعدّ كتاب الطراز للإمام يحيى بن حمزة العلوي اليمني المتوفى سنة 705هـ من الكتب البلاغية التي حاول أصحابها الخروج على طريقة السكاكي، تلك الطريقة المنطقية العقلية الجافة، بما تشمل عليه من المبالغة في التقسيم والتعقيد كذلك، كما يغلب عليها الإيجاز والاختصار الشديد المخلّ بحق البلاغة، مع ندرة الشواهد والتحليلات البلاغة.
وقد حاول يحيى العلوي تقليد ابن الأثير في طريقته الأدبية التحليلية في تناول علوم البلاغة، هرباً من جفاف التناول المنطقي عن السكاكي ومن لف لفّه. ونستطيع أن نقول: إن العلوي قد نجح في سلوك الطريقة الأدبية إلى حدّ كبير؛ وذلك واضح من كثرة شواهده، بل اختلاف تلك الشواهد في كثير من الأحيان عن الشواهد المكرورة عند السكاكي وأتباعه، وإن كان في بعض الأحيان وخاصة في فنون البديع لا يكاد يعدو تلك الشواهد التي درج السكاكي وأتباعه على الاستشهاد بها. وتتميز طريقته كذلك بكثرة التحليلات الأدبية، وقد أولى القرآن عناية خاصة، ولا عجب في ذلك فقد نذر نفسه لبيان أسرار إعجازه كما هو واضح من عنوان كتابه "الطراز المتضمن لأسرار البلاغة وعلوم حقائق الإعجاز".
هذا وقد عني المصنف بترتيب كتابه على فنون ثلاثة عالجت ما يلي: الفن الأول ويشتمل على مقدمات خمس هي: تفسير علم البيان، وتقسيم الألفاظ بالإضافة إلى ما تدل عليه من المعاني، الحقيقة والمجاز وبيان أسرارها، مفهوم الفصاحة والبلاغة، حصر مواقع الغلط في اللفظ المفرد والمركب. الفن الثاني: ويشتمل على المباحث المتعلقة بالمعاني وعلومها. وعلوم البيان وأقسامها، وعلم البديع (خصائصه وأقسامه وأحكامه). الفن الثالث: ويحتوي على تتمة ما بدأ الحديث عنه في الفنين الأول والثاني، كما ويحتوي هذا الفن على حديث عن فصاحة القرآن العظيم وإعجازه، وأقاويل العلماء في ذلك.
