يعد كتاب "الفخري .. في الآداب السلطانية والدول الإسلامية" من كنوز التراث العربي، تحدث فيه مؤلفه محمد بن علي بن طباطبا المعروف بإبن الطقطقا عن أحوال الدول وأمور الملك، وذكر ما استطرفه من أحوال الملوك الفضلاء، وقرأه من سير الخلفاء والوزراء، وبناه على فصلين:
الفصل الأول تكلم فيه على الأمور السلطانية، والسياسات الملكية، وخواص الملك التي يتميز بها عن السوقة، والتي يجب أن تكون موجودة أو معدومة فيه، وما يجب له على رعيته وما يجب لهم عليه، ورصّع الكلام فيه بالآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية والحكايات المستطرفة والأشعار المستحسنة.
والفصل الثاني تكلم فيه على مشاهير الدول التي كانت طاعتها تامة، ومحاسنها تامة، وابتدأ بدولة الأربعة أبي بكر وعمر وعثمان وعلي، رضي الله عنهم، وعلى الترتيب الذي وقع، ثم بالدولة التي تسلمت الملك منها وهي الدولة الأموية، ثم بالدولة التي تسلمت الملك منها وهي الدولة العباسية، ثم بالدول التي وقعت في أثناء حكم الدول الكبار كدولة بويَه وكدولة بني سلجوق وكدولة الفاطميين بمصر على وجه الإيجاز ...
وفي الكتاب يذكر المؤلف منافع هذا الكتاب بالقول: "وهذا كتابٌ يحتاج إليه من يسوس الجمهور، ويدبر الأمور، وإن أنصفه الناس أخذوا أولادهم بتحفظه وتدبر معانيه بعد أن يتدبروه هم، فما الصغير أحوج إليه من الكبير ... ولا ذو الملك بأحوج إليه من ذوب الأدب فمن ينصب بنفسه لمفاوضة الملوك ومجالستهم ومذاكرتهم، يحتاج إلى أكثر مما في هذا الكتاب، فعلى أقل الأقسام لا يسعه تركه ...".
