ألف طه حسين كتابه الجميل (مرآة الضمير الحديث) بناء على مخيلة طريفة حيث نسب الكتاب إلى الجاحظ وجعل صاحبه يأتي إليه وبين يديه كتاب مخطوط لم تعرفه المطبعة بعد، ظفر به عند الوراقين، وفيه رسائل للجاحظ وغير الجاحظ. ومثلما أن طه حسين قد عثر على تلك المخيلة الطريفة فإن مؤلف هذا الكتاب وجد نفسه أمام مخيلة فيها بعض الشبه مخطوطة طه حسين، يقول أنه عثر على هذه السحارة المخيلة وهو يسير ليلاً حسب عادته في ممارسة رياضة المشي، وخول لنفسه حق الاطلاع والنشر والتصرف بما في هذه السحارة من مرويّات هي من صنع الخيال ولكنها أتت لديه من باب حنين الروح إلى أصلها البدوين، فأضحى يمارس تكاذيب الأعراب في هذه الحكاوي.
