يشكل هذا الكتاب مقاربة (نقدية، تأويلية) لتاريخ الفلسفة وأبرز روادها، حيث يتتبع الكتاب نظريات ومشاريع تمخضت عن تغييرات حصلت في العالم الغربي في القرن الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر، ويعقد مقارنات بين هذه وتلك، ويبرز من بين هؤلاء "دورينغ" الذي يرى نفسه ناقداً راديكالياً لجميع الفلسفات والعلوم وخاصة أنه لعب دوراً في مشروع إنجلز في أثناء تشكله، ولذا يعتزم المؤلف في هذه القراءة – كما يقول – "عرض هذه العلاقة المتميزة بين ماركس وإنجلز عبر دورينغ، والسعي إلى كشف النقاب عن إلهام من إنجلز الذي لطالما ظل متضمناً، ومن يريد إخفاء ذلك فقد ضحى دون مبرر حقيقي بجرأة أصالة إنجلز التي لا تُبتسَر، ما يجعلنا نرى مسبقاً المشكلة التي ستتعرض كل دراسة تريد إظهار فكرة سيادة المساعد على الفيلسوف، علماً أن إنجلز سبق ماركس، الذي سيصبح صديقه فيما بعد، في كل شيء ...".
وفي الكتاب أيضاً يتتبع المؤلف إنجلز خاصة في كتابه L’Anti-Dühring والنصوص المحيطة به .. والذي يقدم له لأول مرة إمكانية تطوير مجموعة كبيرة متسلسلة ومتنوعة من المباحث، وعليه سيشكل التدقيق في مقولات المتعاونين حديث هذا الكتاب. فالفرصة سانحة ليخرج إنجلز من صمته ويشهر، ما أسس له في كتمان ربما كان مفروضاً، في ملاحظاته أو أشار إليه في رسائله، ولذا ينبغي اعتبار هذا الكتاب أحد روافد نهر حيث تتمفصل إشكاليات اختلفت أعمارها ومواقعها.
