لماذا اهتم ماركس وإنجليز بالدين؟ على هذا السؤال، يمكن إعطاء جواب ذي طابع تاريخي ، فإن فكرهما تكوّن في بداية الأمر، في مربع الفلسفة. والحال أن الدين كان قد أصبح ماثلاً في الفلسفة، التي كانت تدرّس في الجامعة حوالي منتصف القرن التاسع عشر. عزا إلى الدين، في نظامه (الفلسفي)، وضعية خاصة. وضعية هي، طبعا مثار جدل، بيد أن أكثر الناس رفضاً لا يسعهم أن يضربوا صحفاً في الإشكالية الهيغلية. فإن صلة الفلسفة/ الدين هي رهان هذا الجدل، سواء عند شخص أسمه فويرباخ، وعند شخص اسمه بوير، يريد الميثاق الفلسفة من الوصاية الدينية، أم عند شخص اسمه كير كيفارد يريد على عكسها انتزع الدين من يدي الفلسفة بأفكاره عليه كل وضعية موضوعية يجعله الإيمان، الذاتية المطلقة. علة هذا الوجه، يلتمس ماركس الشاب وانجلز الشاب، الدين، في مستهل بحثهما، في ذلك الحين، كمسألة فلسفية، بيد أن هذا الجواب ليس شافياً. إذ ، فبما تفكيرهما يتطور، ويعدّل ركائز النظرية، وفيما مجال تقصيا تهما يتسع، فإن هذا الاهتمام بالدين لم يفتر في أي وقت من الأوقات، ومؤلفاتهما في سن النضوج تشهد على ذلك. فكيف يعلل هذا الأمر؟ هذا ما يحاول ميشال برتران مناقشته في هذا الكتاب.
