في شهر آب من سنة 1918، والحرب العالمية الأولى في نهاية كوارثها، والشعب اللبناني على آخر رمق، والدولة العثمانية في ارتعاشة الاحتضار، ظهر هذا الكتاب عن المطبعة الأدبية في بيروت. فكان طرفة تاريخية لم يوضع مثلها في أيام السلم والراحة والهناء وسرعان ما أصبح من أجلّ مراجع الأبحاث اللبنانية، ولا غرو فإن ما بذل فيه من عناية جادة، وتحرٍّ دقيق، واستطلاع واسع، وتتبع متواصل، وبحث عميق، ووصف شامل وإحصاء جامع، جعل فيه موسوعة لبنانية عامة خاصة، تشمل حياة هذا البلد من العصور السابقة للتاريخ إلى آخر عهد المتصوفية.
فتناول الأرض في تكوينها الطبيعي، وتعاقب أحقابها الجيولوجية، وفي اختلاف مناخها وتباين تربتها، وفي تنوع مواردها الاقتصادية زراعة وصناعة وتجارة. كما تناول الشعب في تعدد عناصره، وفي مختلف دياناته وطوائفه. ثم في أخلاق أبنائه، وتقاليد مجتمعه، وما عمل فيه على تتابع العصور، من لغات تعاقبها، وثقافات تراكمت، وعبر تلاحقت، وخبرات تراسبت، فحازته عن غيره، وكونت شخصيته الفذّة المتجلية منذ القدم. وقد ضمّ الكتاب صوراً وخرائط موضحة.
