حظي سؤال الإنسان بإهتمام ملحوظ من لدن الفلاسفة؛ حيث توجهت بعض من تأملاتهم إلى البحث في محددات وخصائص هذا الكائن الملغز، الذي قيل بأنه أشرف وأسمى المخلوقات على الإطلاق، فمسألة السمو هاته، لم تأت من فراغ؛ وإنما كانت نتيجة تميزه بصفات لا تتوفر في غيره.
وبالرغم من ذلك فإنه لم يحصل إجماع الفلاسفة بخصوصها؛ إذ أرجع بعضهم ماهية الإنسان إلى العقل والتفكير، والبعض الآخر إلى الأخلاق والمسؤولية، بينما ارتأى آخرون إرجاعها إلى إعتبارات إجتماعية ومادية وثقافية.
غير أن هذا الإختلاف والتباين على مستوى الرؤى والمشارب، لا يعكس بأي وجه من الأوجه، تشكيكاً في حقيقة الإنسان وجوهره؛ بقدر ما إنه ينم عن غنى هذا الكائن وتعدد محدداته.
لهذا السبب بالذات، سنحاول في هذا العمل، البحث في هذه المحددات، آملين في الأخير أن نصل إلى دلالة واضحة وكاملة عنه.
ولعل ما يؤكد غنى وثراء هذا الكائن، هو أن له جهات كثيرة يتحدد بواسطتها، ولا يمكن بتر إحداها إذا ما أردنا أن نصل إلى الغاية المنشودة، المتمثلة في القبض على معنى واضح له؛ فهو كائن واع، أي أن له ملكة يستطيع بواسطتها أن يميز بين الأشياء وأن يصطفى منها ما هو سليم ويترك ما هو فاسد، كما أن له ثوابت ومحددات جوهرية، ظلت لصيقة به منذ نشأته، مما يعني أن التطور والتقدم الحاصلين في الطبيعة لم يؤثرا فيه، أما التأثير الوحيد الذي يبدو متجلياً عليه، فمرده إلى تقلبات المناخ وتحولاته.
