يقضم كسرة الخبز التي معه، بالكاد يمضغها، يجرّ معها حسراتٍ تتلوها حسرات، لا يدري متى ستنتهي هذه المحنة.
آهات الليل تكاثرت عليه، فصمت الصحراء موحش، لا صوت لعربات تأتي وتروح، ولا سكارى يعودون سكارى إلى بيوتهم في الجوار، لا شيء سوى الليل ووحشته، وطنين هذه الحشرات التي تلسعه لم يقتل حشرة واحدة، فهو يخشى منظر الدّم، يكفيه ما يشاهده من دماء بين نهار ونهار.
يبتلع اللقمة حتى تستقر في جوفه، ويبتلع الأخرى والأخرى، ولم يزل في حالة لا يعرفها، أهو حقاً جائع؟... أم أنّ خوف المشهد القادم هو الذي يوقظه من نومه حتى ساعة السحر، يظلّ يتقلب على أرض المحجر، يعدّل بوسادته التي لم تكن سوى قميص وجده حين دخل المحجر أول مرّة، وهذا القميص يحكي له حكاية النوم، فمرّة يتصوره قميص أسيرٍ مسكين تم نحره، ومرّة هو قميص أمير ترك لبسه، ومرّة هو مجرد قميص لا يحكي سوى حكايةً الجمادات الساكتة في الليل.
