في هذا الكتاب المهم حاول زولتان باراني تتبّع مسار عدة ثورات، ودراسة مواقف وسلوكيات الجيوش في هذه الدول لاستخلاص القوانين التي تستند إليها الجيوش والميكانيزمات والأنماط التي تنتهجها - حال حدوث ثورات شعبية - بحسب حجمها وحضورها في جهاز الدولة. وكذلك بحسب طبيعة المجتمع.
درس المؤلف ما جرى في عدة دول شهدت ثورات شعبية، بدءاً من إيران فبورما فالصين فدول أوروبا الشرقية، مثل: "بولندا، المجر، بلغايا، رومانيا، تشيكوسلوفاكيا، ألمانيا الشرقية"، ثم درس ما حصل في دول الربيع العربي ، "تونس، ومصر واليمن وليبيا والبحرين وسوريا"، وأشار كذلك في ختام كتابه إلى ما جرى في الملكيات العربية.
يتمحور هذا الكتاب حول سؤال "كيف تستجيب الجيوش للثورات؟"، وكما سنرى، فإن قرارات الجنرالات وردود أفعالهم تجاه أي ثورة تخضع لعدد كبير من المتغيرات، علاوة على ذلك، فإن بعضها - مثل التنوّع العرقي والطائفي داخل القوات المسلحة - قد تكون ذات أهمية كبيرة في بعض الحالات. أو هامشية وغير ذات صلة في حالات أخرى.
