تكتسب رواية "هارييت بتيشر يستو" أهمية خاصة متعددة الوحدة، فهي بدلالتها التاريخية تمثل مرحلة أساسية في تكوين الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، من استقلال الولايات المتحدة إلى تصادمها إلى اتحادها، ومرحلة تبلور الحياة السياسية فيها لجهة الأنظمة والتشريع، والبذور الأولى يومذاك لنشوء الحياة الحزبية المعاصرة. فضلاً عن الدلالة الحضارية و الاجتماعية والتفاعل بين المؤثرات الاقتصادية (الزراعية في الجنوب، والصناعة في الشمال) وارتباط ذلك بنظام الرق عند أولئك ونظام الحرية عند هؤلاء.
وأعمق ما في الرواية دلالتها الإنسانية من حيث تصوير هذه النماذج البشرية المتعددة: أشخاص يرفقون بالعبيد وآخرين يدعون إلى تحريرهم وآخرين يتاجرون بهم، ورجال ونساء وأطفال يعانون قسوة القدر وظلم البشر. وفي كل هذه العناصر ما جعل الرواية، منذ صدورها إلى اليوم، أثراً عالمي الرواج، ينطلق من واقع النزوع التحرري في زمانها، إلى تطلع الشعوب نحو الحرية في كل زمان.
وبالنظر لأهمية هذا الأثر الأدبي فقد اعتنت دار الجيل بإعادة نشر الترجمة العربية لهذه الرواية، وذلك بعد أن تمت مراجعة النص العربي وتصحيحه من قبل الدكتور "سليم خليل قهوجي" كما واهتم بوضع شرح المفردات الصعبة الواردة في النص، ومهد له بمقدمة، وأتبعه (أي اتبع النص) بأسئلة قد تساعد في فهمه وفي اللفت إلى بعض القضايا اللغوية في سبيل الإفادة التربوية من هذا العمل الأدبي والأثر الإنساني.
