يعدّ كتاب المصباح في المعاني والبيان والبديع للإمام بدر الدين بن مالك المعروف بابن النظم لمن أحسن كتب البلاغة في زمانه، كما ويعد من أحسن الكتب والمؤلفات التي دارت في فلك مفتاح السكاكي حيث ذكر الدارسون أن كتاب المصباح في المعاني والبيان والبديع هو اختصار للجزء الثاني من كتاب المفتاح لأبي يعقوب السكاكي، ومن هؤلاء كارل بروكلمان، والدكتور رمضان شيس، اللذين ذكرا أن "بدر الدين ابن مالك" قد اختصر المفتاح بأجزائه الثلاثة. غير أننا نستطيع أن نقرر أن هذا الكتاب يتميز عن تلك المؤلفات التي دارت في فلك المفتاح بما يخفف من حدّة ذلك المنهج السكاكي بما يشتمل عليه من سمة الجفاف والمنطقية والمبالغة في التعقيد، وقلة الشواهد الأدبية، فامتاز كتاب المصباح بعكس ذلك كله من وضوح العبارة مع إيجازه، وكثرة الشواهد وحسن اختياره لها، مع حسن التبويب، والتقسيم حيث أنه يقسم النوع الواحد إلى ضروب، والضروب إلى أقسام، مع البعد عن التعقيد الشديد والإيغال في جفاف الحدود المنطقية التي استعملها البلاغيون من شراح المفتاح والتلخيص.
ولأهمية الكتاب عني "عبد الحميد هنداوي" بتحقيق نصه معتمداً في ذلك على النسخة المحققة بقلم الدكتور "حسني عبد الجليل"، وعلى المخطوطات المتاحة لها. أما عمله في التحقيق فيتجلى بـ: أولاً: التقديم بدراسة عن الكتاب وصاحبه ومقدمة تاريخية عن البلاغة إلى عصره، ثانياً: خرّج جميع شواهد الكتاب القرآنية؛ والحديثية، والشعرية. ثالثاً: عني بتخريج الأمثال والأقوال المأثورة في مصادرها؛ رابعاً: شرح الألفاظ الغريبة، ودون ترجمة لأهم الأعلام، خامساً: وضع تعليقات علمية على أهم مسائل الكتاب وقضاياه.
