معنى السيرة النبوية : السيرة في اللغة : السنة والطريقة والهيئة. وفي الاصطلاح العام تعني ترجمة حياة شخص ما أو تاريخ حياته.وإذا أطلق لفظ السيرة إنما يراد بها ترجمة حياة النبي، بحيث أصبحت عَلَماً على علم قائم بذاته هو علم السيرة النبوية. وقد كان يطلق عليه المؤرخون المسلمون في فترة أسبق``علم المغازي والسير``. ويبين ذلك ما ورد في مقدمة كتاب السيرة النبوية لابن هشام فيقول: `` لفظتا المغازي والسير إذا أطلقتا فالمراد بهما عند مؤرخي المسلمين تلك الصفحة الأولى من تاريخ الأمة العربية صفحة الجهاد في إقامة صرح الإسلام، وجمع كلمة العرب تحت لواء الرسول، وما يضاف إلى ذلك من نشاط النبي ، وذكر آبائه وما سبق حياته من أحداث لها صلة بشأنه، وحياة أصحابه الذين أبلْوا معه في إقامة الدين``
