يأخذ السرد الرسائلي وظيفته داخل الرسالة ليؤدي الخطاب المقصود في التوجه إلى المرسل إليه، مكوناً سرداً قادراً على خلق التواصل بين المرسل والمرسل إليه معبراً عن الظروف التي احتوتها الرسالة في أثناء صوغها من سرد الكاتب.
فالسرد الرسائلي "هو سرد نثري مخصوص وآني، يخاطب فيه المرسل مرسلاً إليه محدداً، وبينهما ميثاق حاسم في تحديد هوية (المروي) النوعية، فالمرسل يشترك مع المترسل في وضع عام هو كتابة الرسالة، ولكن يتميز بعلاقة التخاطب التراسلي ويكتب نوعاً من الرسائل ويقتضي جواباً أو يكون جواباً على إبتداء، وقد يكشف السرد الرسائلي عن وصف وتحليل جوانب معينة ومحددة من تجربة الكتابة الذاتية.
إذ يعبر الكاتب أو المرسل عن ظاهرة من الظواهر التي ينشط الكاتب الحديث عنها، إلا أنه لا يواكب أحداثاً معينة يومية دقيقة، ولا يمثل ردّ فعل مباشر إزاء وقائع متغيرة، وإنما يعبر عن مواقف فكرية ورؤى ذاتية تغلب عليها الصيغة الأدبية وهذا قدر تعلق الأمر بالظروف النفسية والإجتماعية والإنسانية لحظة كتابة الرسالة، لذا فهي تتمخض عن صورة شاملة تبرز حياة كاتبها كاملة وتفسرها، فنلحظ تعبير الكاتب عن مواكبته المرهفة عبر تصويره الذي يرمي إلى تسجيل دوره في خضّمها، والتعبير عن أحساس الكاتب بما يجري "مقتصرة في ذلك على تمثيل حياته وتتبع أحاسيسه وعواطفه في المرحلة التي يمكن أن تسجلها الرسالة، أو مجموعة الرسائل.
ويدّون الكاتب في هذا تجربة من تجاربه بعيداً عن الأنا والنظرة الجزئية، وإن يغلب عليها الإهتمام بسيرة الكاتب لا بوصفها مقصداً أدبياً مستقلاً بل بوصفها معنى من معاني الترسل الأساسية، وإذا كان من أهم أهداف السيرة الذاتية هو الوصول إلى جمهور المتلقين عبر مشروع توزيع منفتح وغير محددة، فإن الرسالة تكتفي بتعيين مرسل إليه تتوجه إليه الرسالة بطريقة شبه خفية لا تنكشف على سواه.
