الناس في اليابان لا يلعبون الكلمات المتقاطعة كثيراً، بل يلعبون سودوكو. كل يوم يتم حل آلاف الأحجيات في القطارات وغرف الانتظار. ورغم أن الاسم ياباني -الترجمة التقريبية هي "مكان الرقم"- إلا أن الحجية نفسها قد لا تكون يابانية. هناك نسخة مبسطة اخترعها عالم الرياضيات السويسري Euler في القرن الثامن عشر، ويعتقد أن الأحجية سودوكو في يومنا هذا قد تطورت من تلك اللعبة. كل الأحاجي في هذا الكتاب والتي بلغت 100 أحجية هي من اختراع Wayne Gould (واين غوولد) وهو قاض سابق في هونغ كونع من عشاق الأحاجي. لقد وقعت يداه على سودوكو في مكتبة مدينة طوكيو وبدأ باختراع الأحاجي بنفسه، وقد نشرها في التايمز.
منذ ظهورها في صحيفة التايمز يوم 12 نوفمبر 2004، أصبحت الصفحة الخلفية اليومية للأحجية سودوكو ظاهرة بين الناس. يشارك آلاف الأشخاص يومياً في مسابقة الصحيفة وقد أرسل العديد من القراء رسائل لعبروا عن مدى استمتاعهم بالأحاجي-ومن بينهم كاسرو الشيفرة Bletchley Park الذين لا يفوتون يوماً واحداً منها،وعشاق استخدام الكمبيوتر الذين صنعوا برامج لحل الأحاجي التي لم يتمكنوا من حلّها بأنفسهم.
خلافاً للكلمات المتقاطعة، لست بحاجة إلى إتقان أي لغة معينة لكي تأسرك جاذبية الأحجية سودوكو. في الواقع، لست بحاجة حتى إلى معرفة كيفية العدّ. ما عليك سوى وضع كل عدد من 1 إلى 9 في أي ترتيب كان، داخل كل صف (من اليسار إلى اليمين) وكل عمود (من الأعلى إلى الأسفل) وكل مربع (مؤلف من تسع خانات).
